An Evening in May……

There once was a fair evening in May……  in the not so distant past….

…a strong young man was helping his father with chores in the barn….

….and they found a great cache of eggs….

…..hidden….

…by the crafty hens…

(oh hello little chicks)

All of the farm critters were enjoying the warm day…..

…eating …

…and eating…

….and eating…

…and eating some more…..

(a triptych of faces)

….while Bobbin….

…and Sadie….

…and Grizz begged, barked, and purred ….

…and a little girl….

….pumped with her strong, strong legs….

…high up in the sky…

(with very dirty feet)

….and a crazy boy….

 …..aimed for crazy stunts…..

…and another little boy…

….fought a good fight holding Nerf guns and Batman….

…..against terrible big brothers….

….and a Giant…

…..who was slain and needed CPR.

And that, my friends ….. is an average evening in May…

….on our little corner of heaven on the Palouse….

*** A note about B/W images:  I usually don’t process my family photos in black and white because I want to see my kid’s red hair.  But this time, the story-telling element of my series was just begging for black and white.  To me, taking away the color helps me focus on the story and the emotion of the image — my eyes look for the story and don’t get distracted by the vibrant colors.  No worries though….. I still love the color images as well!   ***

You continue to inspire me … this is an amazing collection of photographs and you’re clearly loving your Contax. I can’t begin to pick a favorite here but if pushed it’s between your daughter’s dirty feet and “against terrible big brothers.” Thanks so much for your advice in the past and for all your beautiful work.

I can see them all now! About halfway through I realized all the photos were in black and white. I loved it for this story. You’re right about being able to focus on the story instead of the vibrant colors. That beautiful red hair is definitely vibrant!

P.S. Reid isn’t the only one growing up!

Contax 645 | Adventures in Film

A few months ago, I got a bee in my bonnet to purchase a medium format film camera…..the Contax 645 with a Zeiss 80mm f/2.0 lens.  Crazy, right?  Why try to learn a whole new system when what I have works perfectly fine?   Well……. not crazy ….. because I love to learn.  And learning to shoot film has been on my professional bucket list for some time now.  And with a family wedding on the horizon, I thought now would be a good time to take the plunge.  Oh, no worries!  I’m still going to shoot the wedding in digital, but I do hope to shoot some in film as well — some the portraits before the wedding.  The only crazy part is the waiting for scans to come back!

But the waiting was worth it…….  I’m so in love with this image….. perfect skin tones straight off the scan….. and the dreamy depth of field thanks to the Zeiss 80mm lens at f/2.0.  Perfection.

I shot one roll of Kodak Portra 400 and one roll of Fuji Pro 400H, and with that little bit of experience, I think I like the Portra better.  At least with the skin tones of my children, it seems to be a better match.   But honestly, at this point it could be simple user error. :)  I felt so lost not being able to look at the histogram and LCD and see if I was doing OK with exposure.

Another thing to get used to — manual focus.  Yes, the Contax 645 does have auto focus, but it is pretty slow and the focal point is only in the middle.  So manual focus is best.  In this image you can see that the focus fell on his sleeve instead of his face, but in my book, it’s still a keeper.

Using the “Sunny 16” rule here to guesstimate exposure.

And here, I was trying to make more of a silhouette.   Interestingly, there is much more detail in the shadows than I would expect from a digital exposure like this.

And the lucky capture of the almost 11 year old who hates having his photo taken.

My first impressions of my adventures in film — complete love.

It’s so much fun to see these. I use the Sunny 16 rule quite a bit. Any trick I can use is good in my book. Our boys are 11! Wow. Great photo of him. The first photo is my favorite. And I like the one of your hubby capturing you while you’re capturing the kids. I hope you’re all doing well.

Him & Me

him…… without whom I would be lost

and me…..

So much I love about these. It seems almost life sized and I want to have a conversation with you! What a camera!

Kaden | Class of 2013 | Colton High School

Meet Kaden, Colton High School class of 2013 ….. the last of my senior reps for 2013.  Kaden’s beautiful smile, sparkly green eyes, and athletic prowess combined with warm afternoon sunshine and a full moon (the first of two that month), made for a gorgeous senior session!  I like to have my seniors do a variety of facial expressions for me … from wide and flashy smiles, to serious and soul-searching eyes…… but with Kaden, a big, beautiful smile just happened so naturally.:D

Those eyes– even in black and white — are SO beautiful…..

Found light under a sprawling tree — a rather plain background looks fabulous when shot at f/2.0 with my awesome 85mm lens (go to lens for seniors).

Count those rings….. what a testimony to hard work and teamwork.

That beautiful moon …. yes, a set of merged exposures and a little Photoshop involved.  Still ….. gorgeous!

Thank you, Kaden for being an awesome senior rep!  Best of luck in all of your future endeavors!

Class of 2014 —- what do you think?  Would you like to be a senior rep for Almota Roses Photography?

I’m trying to decide whether or not to continue the program…..

Cacey | Class of 2013 | Colfax High School

Working through more of my senior reps from last year, meet Cacey from the Colfax High School class of 2013.  Gorgeous, vivacious, sweet, and devoted to serving — that would describe Cacey.  We had a wonderful, sun-filled session complete with bright green boots, a sparkly black top hat,  a newly painted red barn, and rusty old trucks.  Thank you, Cacey!  Don’t ever lose your love of life!  Best of luck in the coming year!

Love, love, love light found in the most unusual places…..such as in an old, greasy shop… (back lit by the sun and front lit by a silver reflector)

Fun.

Gorgeous, gorgeous…….  Thank you, Cacey for being an excellent senior rep!  Best of luck in all of your endeavors!
